Simulated terror attack at Resorts World
By Imelda Saad Posted: 26 January 2011 0037 hrs

On Tuesday evening, Singapore authorities simulated a terror attack to test the emergency preparedness of the Home Team and the security team from Resorts World Sentosa, one of the Singapore's newest tourist attractions. It started with a suspicious package in an auditorium that no one realised and soon the smoke filled the room and guests were evacuated. After that, a second parcel exploded outside the theater and three gunmen opened fire and leaving scores injured and dead. This simulated exercise involved 500 Resorts World staff and officers from the various Home Team agencies, including the Special Operations command team. As the integrated resort is new, authorities took the opportunity to familiarise themselves with it. It is their interest to make sure that the IR staff are well trained, well prepared to make sure that in any emergency, they are in their best position to take care of the customers within the resort.

I feel that this simulation is a very good way to prepare Singaporeans that we cannot take things for granted and it is also part of our job to make sure that terrorists are unable to attack us. If every one can do our part, i believe Singapore will still be a safe country. Even if the terrorist attack is real and we are really prepared for this, we are definitely not afraid of it. Since the Resorts World Sentosa is the Singapore's newest tourist attractions and attracts thousands of visitors on a daily basis, i have reasons to believe that terrorists may try to attack there as it is one of the most crowded place in Singapore and most of the tourists know that Singapore is a high security country, the tourists will definitely let their guards there. This is the chance whereby the terrorists would attack here and to prove them wrong. So in order to maintain Singapore as a safe and high security country, every one of us need to do our part. Hence, we should always keep a high alert on suspicious people or package.

S'pore hospitals focusing on patient wellness

By Saifulbahri Ismail Posted: 20 January 2011 1530 hrs http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1105861/1/.html

Singapore are making a crucial strategic change in emphasis which is shifting focus from being disease-centric to wellness-centric. This shift would requires hospitals to work closely with the patients' and their families and with other healthcare providers in the community. Every discharged patient has a personal nurse in virtual contact to ensure that the chronic disease is well-managed. Budget is definitely needed for this project and hence implementing it will take years and results will only be seen in the future.

I feel that this strategic change is good for the society. With this change, the patient would have more care and concern from the doctors and nurses, which will definitely allow the patient to feel happier as they know that there is someone who actually care for them. This may also be one of the reason to fight hard with the diseases. Though having a personal nurse to every discharged patient is a good idea, but it will be costly as it will have a lack of nurses in the society and not many people except the rich ones are able to afford such privilege. So i hope that the government would subsidies and lend a helping hand to those needy.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1104240/1/.html Suspected molester nabbed
By Mustafa Shafawi Posted: 12 January 2011 1726 hrs

A 27 years old man molested a 14 years old girl in a park at Woodlands. On Tuesday evening, the man approached the victim and asked her to follow him on the pretext that she had committed a crime. The girl had no choice but to follow and he brought her to a secluded area in the park and took the opportunity to molest her when there was no one else. After molesting, he fled. But luckily, the police arrested him on Wednesday around 5.30am. He will be charged on Thursday with outrage of modesty in court and if convicted, he could be jailed for up to 10 years and fined.

I feel that this kind of behaviour is definitely not acceptable in Singapore. The suspect should put himself on the victim's parent shoe. What will he feel when he knows that his own daughter had been molested? I bet he will feel super sad and angry and wish that the suspect will be hack to death! He should accept the consequences after doing this kind of behaviour and not run away from it. He should face the music and never do it again. If he didnt molest the victim, he will not have black record and ruin his future. So, i think he deserves this treatment.

Car rental business booming due to higher COE
By Hetty Musfirah Abdul Khamid Posted: 06 January 2011 2131 hrs

Due to the higher COE, people decided to on hold or not to purchase new car yet. If they have booked a car and they are unsuccessful in the COE, they do not want to top up the price. They rather rent a car instead. Despite the expected Lunar New Year boom, the company, Popular Rent a Car decided to put expansion plans on hold as captail and operating costs will go up by 30% to 40% per cent if he buys new cars with the higher COEs. For the Lunar New Year, all of its small cars have been booked as a lot of people want to have a car for the New Year. With the COE going up, there are more enquiries for long term rental in terms of weeks or even for a year. They have customers planning to rent car until new cars become affordable. Beside renting, more people are now more open to the concept of car sharing. Trading-in has also become popular as there is higher value for used cars.

I feel that renting a car is definitely a next resort of owning a car since right now, the COE is way too expensive for us to own a car. I believe that the COE of a car would not reduce in a short period of time as the government wants to decrease the number of cars in Singapore. Therefore, it is quite impossible for us to own a car, especially youngster like us who have just gotten our driving license. In my opinion, i would rent a car if i really wish to have it. If not i would just stick to taking public transport as it is cheaper and more convenient.

Andie Chen: "I lost weight till I got sick."
By Han Wei Chou Posted: 06 January 2011 1113 hrs

This article is about two actors sacrifice for the sake of their role in the MediaCorp drama. First, the Singapore screen veteran Chen Hanwei's pulled out his teeth because of the drama "The Best Things in Life". Second, it was Andie Chen who shed ten kilos in a little over a month just to play his character more convincingly in his upcoming Mandarin drama "Prosperity" and even fall sick because of it. Andie Chan had a rough idea of the character and so he went for the imaging and thought that this character would be more convincing if he is really skinny so he lost six kilograms before the shooting began. When he saw the rushes, he discovered that he was right so he decided to lose another four kilograms. However, this drastically loss of weight took a toll of his health as he reduced his food intake and worked out less.

I feel that it is not worth it to deteriorate their health for the sake for acting a drama. A drama will last a period of time only but worsen their health will last forever as it is not easy to repair their health to their original form when it has already damaged. Andie Chan can exercise and eat lesser to lose weight but not reduced his food income drasmatically. This caused him to be fatigue everytime as he does not have the nutrition and energy. So he is not setting a good example to the public, I think that he shouldn't do this as the young children may learn from him. We should always emphasise on exercising more to lose weight and not starve ourselves.

Oil prices fall, cold weather limits losses
Posted: 30 December 2010 0445 hrs

The oil prices are increasing when the extreme cold in the northern hemisphere persists. On wednesday, the US northeast region dug out ''Snowpocalypse'', causing chaos as hundreds of flights were canceled. Due to the face of brisk demand and end-of-year inventory adjustments by refiners, US reserves dropped by 15 million barrels in the first half of December.

I feel that they shouldnt keep increasing the oil prices, causing to own a car even more expensive as the petrol prices is increasing too. It makes the citizen to have a higher expenses which many people are unable to afford a car. I know that this is due to the cold weather that increases the oil of petrols. So i can only wish that the cold weather will not persist and less oils will be needed hence will decrease the price of oil. This will allows the citizens to have more spending power and boost the country's economy.

http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1097983/1/.html COE prices for car at highest level since 2000
By Hetty Musfirah Abdul Khamid Posted: 08 December 2010 1618 hrs

The COE price has been increasing rapidly since 2000. For the Open Category, the certificates are usually used to buy cars was up S$15,010 to $54,900. COE premiums for big cars of more than 16,00 cc rose from S$14,612 to S$62,502. For cars of 1,00cc and below, COE rose S$8,604 to S$47,604. Car dealers expect the COE price to increase around S$3,000 to S$5,000 but didnt expect to rise to S$15,000. Industry players expect the COE price to increase even more next year, hitting S$100,000. Car dealers said that some customers want new cars for the Lunar New Year and therefore the price of COE will keep increasing.

There will be many Singaporeans who are unable to afford to own a car because of the increasing COE price. I don't understand why COE price is increasing so rapidly. Is the government trying to control the amount of people owning a car so that there won't be massive jam in the road ? If this is the reason why, i would support it as during the peak hour, there would be traffic jam causing inconvenient to many people.
Secondly, if there's high COE price means many people cannot afford it which is a good thing too. Youngster who has just gotten their driving license would want to own a car if it is affordable. But now the COE price is too high, hence they cannot afford it. This means that there will be lesser accidents and Singapore will be a safer country!
